Overview
Pasadena is the architectural old soul of greater Los Angeles — a city of arroyo stone, broad lawns, and the Greene & Greene craftsman estates that defined California residential design at the turn of the last century.
Settled in the 1870s as a resort for Midwesterners escaping winter, Pasadena became the cultural capital of the San Gabriel Valley. The California Arts and Crafts movement found its fullest expression here, and the Rose Parade and Caltech anchored its civic identity.
Beyond the legendary Gamble and Blacker houses, Pasadena holds dense blocks of craftsman bungalows, Spanish Revival estates, and Mid-Century Modern works by architects like Richard Neutra and Wallace Neff in the hills above the Arroyo Seco.
Old Pasadena, the Norton Simon Museum, the Huntington Library, and the annual Rose Parade shape a quieter, more civic-minded pace than the Westside — garden-city living at its most refined.
