Overview
Hollywood is equal place and myth — the working district around the studios and the boulevard, layered with a century of civic ambition, revitalization, and the residential streets that line its flanks.
Officially a city in 1903 and annexed by Los Angeles in 1910, Hollywood became the epicenter of the nascent film industry by the 1920s. The boulevard's theaters and the surrounding apartment courts and craftsman homes reflect successive waves of boom, decline, and renewal.
Beyond the landmark movie palaces (Grauman's, the Egyptian, the Pantages), the residential side streets hold Spanish Revival, craftsman, and Streamline Moderne apartment buildings, with newer contemporary infill near the corridor's recent densification.
Dense, walkable, and transit-served, Hollywood has re-emerged as a live-work district with rooftops, music venues, and the revived street life around Hollywood & Vine. It remains the city's most recognizable address.
