Tour a Reborn Midcentury Pierre Koenig House in Coastal California
Designer Jamie Bush revitalizes a rare coastal midcentury residence designed by modern master Pierre Koenig.
Architectural icon Pierre Koenig remains celebrated for pushing the boundaries of structural steel and glass across Southern California. In this profile, Wallpaper* explores a sensitive revitalization led by interior architect and designer Jamie Bush on one of Koenig's rare coastal residential projects.
Bush's intervention balances careful historic preservation with contemporary livability, preserving Koenig’s signature minimalist post-and-beam frame while introducing organic materials and custom vintage furnishings. The palette harmonizes raw structural elements with natural textures to soften the crisp modernist volumes against the dramatic coastal landscape.
The project demonstrates the continuing relevance of Case Study-era modernism, presenting a compelling blueprint for stewarding California's midcentury architectural gems through thoughtful, craft-driven restoration.
