Overview
At the southern end of Santa Monica Bay, Manhattan Beach is the most upscale of the South Bay beach cities — a walkable strand of bluff-top homes, a lively downtown, and a famously well-kept residential grid.
Originally part of the 1888 Rancho Sausal Redondo, Manhattan Beach was platted in 1901 and grew as a seaside resort and then a residential city. The Strand, the paved beachfront walk, became one of the most valuable strips of residential frontage in the country.
Bluff-top contemporary houses line the Strand with glass walls toward the ocean, while the inland streets hold a mix of craftsman, Spanish, and sharply designed modern replacements — a city that has rebuilt itself generationally.
Beach volleyball (the sport's capital), surf breaks, and a dense, walkable downtown on Manhattan Avenue make this a family-oriented coastal city with a strong civic identity distinct from the Westside.
