Overview
Stretching from San Vicente Boulevard up into the Santa Monica Mountains, Brentwood is a composed, residential Westside district of broad medians, canyon-edge homes, and a quiet civic life centered on its village main street.
Brentwood began as a division of the 1839 Rancho San Vicente y Santa Monica, developing as a streetcar suburb in the early 1900s. The Brentwood Country Club, the VA grounds, and the Getty Center (1997) above it have shaped its civic and cultural identity in turn.
The flatlands hold Spanish Revival and traditional estates along San Vicente's coral-tree median, while the canyons — Mandeville, Sullivan, Kenter — hold significant mid-century and contemporary houses by architects including Ray Kappe and others associated with the Southern California modern tradition.
The San Vicente median is the neighborhood's social spine — joggers, cyclists, and dog walkers along its coral trees. Brentwood Village, the farmer's market, and the Getty's tram above make for a composed, family-oriented Westside rhythm.
