Overview
Bel Air is the most private of the Platinum Triangle's enclaves — a gated, canyon-and-ridge community where long driveways, mature landscaping, and a genuine removal from the city define the residential experience.
Developed beginning in 1923 by oilman Alphonzo Bell, Bel Air was conceived from the start as a guard-gated, covenant-restricted estate community. The Bel-Air Bay Club and the Hotel Bel-Air established its social tone, and successive generations of entertainment, finance, and tech wealth have kept it among the most expensive ZIP codes in the country.
Estates here are large-scaled and often architect-designed, ranging from period revival mansions to glass-and-steel contemporary works, with lot sizes that allow guest houses, pools, and privacy buffers most of the city cannot accommodate.
Life in Bel Air is deliberately quiet: gated entries, canyon roads, and the Hotel Bel-Air's gardens. The Stone Canyon Reservoir and the adjacent hills offer a sense of removal that feels farther from downtown than its geography suggests.
