Arthur Silvers

1920s–1990sModern / Civic

Arthur Silvers was a prominent modernist architect and a key partner in the firm Kennard and Silvers, one of the early Black-owned architecture practices in Los Angeles. Emerging in the post-World War II era, Silvers' work represented a deliberate departure from traditional European influences, favoring a modernist approach inspired by the designs of Richard Neutra and Victor Gruen. His practice contributed to the evolution of Los Angeles architecture by embracing clean, modern aesthetics. Beyond his design work, Silvers was a dedicated advocate for diversity within the profession, serving as the Historian and Parliamentarian for the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) during the 1970s. His career reflects a commitment to both architectural innovation and the advancement of minority representation in the field.
